My natural family portrait photography focusses on a family’s distinct character. Families go through phases as they grow and develop with their intricate bonds maturing as they navigate life. When choosing a family photographer, it is important to choose one who understands how these dynamic bonds can be appreciated through the medium of photography. A photographer that can capture the spirit and soul of what makes your family special.
Unlike a lot of family portrait photographers, I don’t stage or force moments. Instead, I let things naturally unfold, applying the same approach I do to documentary style photography. This produces a picture quality that is genuine and honest. The finished product conveys the bonds that bring you together as well as the personalities, atmosphere and energy.

The Paterson’s
I photograph sessions in a variety of locations - forests, coastlines, parks - natural environments that help put families at ease, helping me to capture moments honestly. I shoot mostly in black and white as it helps the viewer to look deeper into the purpose and narrative of each photograph. Colour differences on items such a clothing can often be very distracting. By black and white photography removes this layer of information, the image is stripped back back to fundamentals; moment, light and composition.
That being said, colour photographs are also very special, even more so when shooting in the Autumn and Spring months. At these special times of the year, natural light is softer which brings more delicate hues. Nature too is at its most varied in colours and shade and can create a truly beautiful collection of photographs.

$750 ~ Weekdays
$950 ~ Saturdays, Sundays & Holidays
Fees include a $200 booking fee which is needed to secure the session and date, remaining amounts are billed two weeks prior to the portraiture session.
