Chinese Wedding Photographer

Melbourne & Mornington Peninsula

Chinese weddings are among the most extravagant and unique I have had the pleasure to capture over the years I have been a photographer. These weddings are a grand affair exuding a vibrancy, energy and tradition unlike any other celebration. They’re perfectly suited to my more natural style of wedding photography.

The event is often shot across a number of venues where the bride and groom participate in a number of small ceremonies and events. One such ceremony is where the groom arrives to collect the bride from her house to escort her to where the vows will be made. But before he can take the bride away, he must participate in a series of games and challenges organised by the bridal party in order to prove his love and commitment to his wife-to-be.

Another unique event that often features in the couple’s special day is the Chinese Tea Ceremony – an ancient tradition that dates back over 1200 years. During this beautiful occasion, the bride and groom will serve their family tea as a sign of respect and gratitude for the years of love and care.

And then the celebration that follows the wedding ceremony is never a small or quiet affair. The dinner is luxurious with up to eight courses being lavished on guests. Often at this time the bride will change into a traditional red dress, on of many outfit changes she will make in the night. Then there is the entertainment which can include a parade of dancers performing the traditional Chinese Lion Dance with firecrackers to bless the marriage and send the couple bountiful wishes of good fortune.

From my years of experience as a documentary wedding photographer, Chinese weddings and being dazzled by sumptuous and exciting cast of events, I have learned that core to the narrative is the happy couple’s love and success for the future and that this is to be reflected in the wedding photography.

Chinese wedding documentary

My natural Chinese wedding photography lends itself to cultural weddings that are family orientated and full of personality. My style is often described as ‘reportage wedding photography’ or ‘documentary wedding photography'. In a nutshell, I discreetly capture your wedding day without dictating or getting you to follow a script.

When the groom is overcoming the bridal party challenges, I capture the eruption of laughter from the groomsmen and bridesmaids as well as the loving affection the husband shows his wife-to-be as he romantically escorts her to the wedding ceremony. During the symbolic, ancient tea party I capture respectful scenes of appreciation between the bride and groom and their soon to be in-laws. And during the banquet, I use the dazzling display as a tool to capture the intimate smiles, tears, laughter and joy that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The couples I have worked with have often told me how it is an emotional experience when they receive their wedding photography, as they get to see their wedding from this unique aspect, showing them all the intimate and natural moments that they otherwise miss being a busy bride and groom.

When planning your wedding, whether fully traditional or with a touch of western contemporary, it is great to have a Chinese wedding photographer who is understanding of the cultural importance of your day. I urge you to take a look at my Chinese wedding photo galleries to get a better feel of the natural style of wedding photography that I apply to all my Chinese wedding commissions.
